My first ring

Wow! It has been  so long since I made this ring!
I can believe how fast time flies. I made it back in May, but didn't get to take pictures or post about it until now.
I hope that now that I don't have to go to physical rehab everyday anymore I can get back on track on my jewellery making and on my blogging too!

This is my first attempt at ring making and stone setting.
I have used sterling silver, fine silver and the stone is a beautiful Labradorite in a beautiful tear shape.

Last January I got some new tools and a video made by Roma Buchanan on metalsmithing, and there was a tutorial on stone setting, but it hasn't been until last May that I got to work with it.

I can believe I made it on the first attempt!
It really got properly soldered and the stone fitted perfectly. What an achievement! And it was so encouraging! I always wanted to take on silversmithing classes, but haven't been able to. So for me, right now my best option is to learn on my own with tutorials and videos.
It is just a shame that I haven't had the time to work more on it.

Its still a bit rough around the edges, but I actually like the look of it.
It is a statement ring as it is quite big but it looks great. I have wore it often as it is like a milestone for me and a reminder that I can actually do it! And the best part is that I am loving it.

My two little ones are starting School on Monday, but it won't be until the end of September that they will be attending school for the full hours, so still is going to be a busy month for me, but hopefully after that it will be show time!

Yesterday I read in Facebook a quite funny quote.
Someone said that September is the Monday of the months. I found it very funny, but quite untrue, as I see it as an opportunity to start on new things.

So have you got any plans for this new and exciting part of the year?

**********************************************************

¡Wow!

¡Y qué animos me dá!

Misunderstood

I have been thinking about writing this post or not for few days now as this has been a little bit distressing for me.

On the last BSBP post I said something not very kind to my partner Shiraz.
I said I hated some of the beads she sent me.

Before I get started on the subject I would like to say that it wasn't my intention to be ungrateful or unkind to her at all in any way. In fact I was very pleased with the soup ingredients she sent me.
And because she sent the beads so early on I had plenty of time to work on my pieces and I have truly enjoyed working with her.

Going back to the issue.
I did say that I hated the beads.
First, i didn't think the word hate was such a strong word in the English language as people use it all the time to say things they don't like, or the don't want to do.

The beads that I was referring to were evil's eyes.
As I mentioned on my earlier post these beads are traditionally thought to protect you from evil.
The beads are not actually ugly, despite the fact they look like eyes, but it is not the look that make me dislike them, but all that supernatural theme around them.
I have always been too cautious with everything that has anything to do with amulets, charms and supernatural.
I don't even read my zodiac sign on the papers or even watch movies with ghosts and spirits on them. And when I see one of those ladies that read your future I run as fast as I can.

So this is the reason I had issues working with those beads.
But as you see I decided to work with them despite everything I just said.

There were many other beads Shiraz sent that were very pretty to work with and I didn't on this occasion. I worked with those evil's eyes because it was a challenge I wanted to take on.
So the fact that I chose to work with those beads was a way of respect to her, because rather than getting rid of them I created a pretty and meaningful bracelet.

I would like to thank everyone who has brought this to my attention, otherwise I wouldn´t have known that I was being unkind towards Shiraz.

As for her, she has been too kind for not taking any offence, or at least not saying anything. I would like you know that I have already apologised to her.

****************************************************

BSBP: Reveal Day

The day has finally come!
This party seemed like a long wait, since this time I got my beads ages ago and I started to work on my pieces as soon as I got them.

To tell you the truth I am quite pleased with what I have made.
But first let me remind you who my parter is and where she is from.

My Partner is called Shiraz Biggie, and she is from New York, the Big Apple.
She writes a blog called Secret Songs Designs and if you would like to buy any of her creations she also has an Etsy shop.

She sent me a lovely selection of beads which were good fun to work with.
Seriously, I had many ideas but not enough beads to make them. I had even consider to ask her to send me more beads!
I have truly enjoyed working with this soup although I had a couple of challenges during the process.
If you would like to see what Shiraz sent me just go here.

Each piece has a bit of a story, so lets begin.

My first piece was a huge challenge for me because I didn´t like the beads. But that is ok.
This beads are traditionally used to guard you from evil as amulets, but I don't believe in the power of amulets or anything of the sort, although I do believe that there is a spiritual world and we should be aware of it.
The question is if these amulets do work, or if it is just a way for people to make money.
I believe that the best way of keeping yourself from evil is by having faith in Jesus. That's way I made that tag and I also believe that when things don't go well, you need to keep having faith and hope, as better times will come.
So this is  the story behind this bracelet. The beads themselves are powerless, but faith and hope are not. They have the power of lifting you up and take you far, take you to your goals and dreams.
So as you see, this bracelet started being something I disliked, but has become one of my favourites and I have decide to encourage someone else by giving it away to anyone who leaves a comment in this post.

For this bracelet I made two tags in copper with the words faith and hope, and I made the clasp also in copper.

My next piece is also a bracelet.
I made a focal piece using some of the mother of pearl beads Shiraz sent me.
It looks fantastic! And I love the fact taht the beads swivel.
Here I had two choices. One was to use the blue beads she sent me, wich are lovely or go with the colours of the focal.
At the end I decided to go with the browns and beiges but then used red beads to break that soft palette of colours and I must say that it does work very nicely.
Here I have also used the clasp she sent me.

What do you say? Should I have gone with the blues instead?

And now the star of the show.
I am just so sorry that my pictures are not that great and therefore don't really show all the colours and textures of the pieces.

Opposite to the other pieces I had no idea what to do when I started making this necklace, so I just had to go along and do what the beads were telling me to do (sort of speak).
I started off with the thicker strand of beads, made with some of the beads Shiraz sent me and some that I had in my stash. I also added some bronze beads in different sizes, shapes and textures. It looked good but poor.
Then I made another strand with seed beads in different shades of brown. Nice, but it needed more.
Finally I had a piece of green leather that matched the colour of the focal piece to perfection. Thre was only one problem, it was too short! I had to add a bit of a chainmaille that I made myself and it looked the bussines.
For the clasp, I used another of those lovely square Mother of Pearl beads and made a little bar with copper and I had a pretty and unique clasp.
Then there was the issue of attaching the focal to the necklace. I made a bail with hammered copper and that was it.
This necklace is quite different to what I normally make as I make more simple and romantic pieces. But I am very happy with the end result.

I would like to thank you for your time and to Lori Anderson for organizing this event.

And if you would like to visit the other participants, get cracking as we are a lot of artists!
You can find the whole list with all the links in here.

BSBP: The beads I sent

When I was getting ready the beads to send to Shiraz, I wanted to make as much as possible myself.
As I am making more and more components, it was just right to send her some.

The clasp is made of copper and it has been hand stamped and then oxidized.
I was very pleased with the result and I hope she likes it too.

Then I also added some other handmade components, like those tiny cute spirals, that she could use as dangles for bracelets or earrings, and also a couple of hand stamped copper links.
I didn't oxidize them as I thought they looked good just as they are.
I have also added some bronze beads shaped like a star that I got in a bead shop few months back.

For the focal, I have send a enamelled metal bead by Susan Kennedy.
As you already know I love enamels and since right now I am not in a position of making any enamelled piece myself I just got one from other artist.
This is a very large metal bead enamelled in lovely dark colors that shine as the light reflects on it. Very pretty.

The rest are just some Czech glass beads, Murano beads and mother of pearl coordinating beads.
I can't honestly wait to see what she makes with all of this.

Just remember, this Summer are three different Reveal dates. The first and second one have been already, and the third one, where I will be taking part, is happening on the 25th of August.
Don't miss it!!

********************************************************

BSBP: The beads that I have received

What a treat it is every time!
I always love getting beads and supplys on the mail, but it is kind of special when you are getting a sellection of beads that someone else on the other part of the world has very carefully prepared for you.

This time I have got a very nice mixture.
There are things that I have already workd with, but there are also some elements that I have never used.

For instance those eyes. Never have really liked them, but it is not a bad thing as this is the whole purpose of this event, challenging yourself. And I must say that as I am writing this, they are growing on me.

Then there are other pieces, that just because the colours are a great combination, and I already have a couple of ideas going around my head.

The clasp is quite cute, but honestly, I don't know how I am going to use it. The brass is quite difficult for me to match, but I will give it a try.

And finally, the focal. A beautiful and huge shell, that stands by itself. But because the last time I recieved a beautiful focal was so intrincate and I left it basically hunging from a chain, I have decided to make something more elaborate. Let's see if what I have in mind works.

********************************

Time in London

Our time in London has been fantastic. Not so much for everything that we have done, but for the people that we have seen.
It was so lovely to catch up with family and friends. How much we miss them.

The weather was very bad, even for this time of the year.
It wasn't so much the rain, which we had plenty of, but it was cold! It looked more like Autumn than Summer. What a pity! My little ones can testify of that.
But even in this bad weather we got to enjoy the outdoors. Love the parks in London. So open, so green and so beautiful.

(A park in Ruislip)

And we got to get some days of sun and fun.
But of course, because of the rain we had to do most of the things indoors.
We went to the Natural History Museum where we saw loads of Dinosaurs, being the T Rex the scariest of them all.
They have a mechamical one and I had to tell the girls that it run in batteries as they were quite frightened. They are still very little.
But it was fun! Specially the ice cream afterwards.
And also we went to The Victoria and Albert Museum and The Docklands Museum.(I have to tell you about The Docklands one).

(Victoria and Albert Museum)

I even got to have a propper cup of tea with the Queen. Well, not quite, as she was made of wax she would have melted. But I had plenty of tea. Being in the UK what other thing I could have drunk? I am guessing Ale, but no alcohol for me these days.

(The Queen at Warwick Castel)

We had a great time. Specially Ania, my 4 year old, as she was very impressed with all the new things that she was seeing and doing.
I don't know if I have mentioned this before but at home, my husband speaks in English to the girls, so language wasn't a problem, and when we got to see museums, and plays, and all sort of things they could enjoy it to the fullest as they understood most of what it was said.

********************************************

(Museo Victoria and Albert)

Pretty Things Giveaway!!

And what a giveaway.
Lori is having a fantastic giveaway in her Blog.

Well, actually there are 5 different gifts.
I was going to show you some pictures, but for some reason Blogger is not having it.
I will try later.

By the way is only untill Friday!

My BSBP partner: Shiraz

Hi! I am back!

It has been a really nice time visiting people and places, but I am so glad to be back home. It is so true that saying, there is no place like home. Don't you think?

Overall, we have been away from home for a whole month! It has beeen three weeks in London, and the rest on the way to and from London.

There is so much to tell, but first is first.
Let me introduce you to my BSBP partner Shiraz Biggie.

Shiraz has an Etsy shop with a really beautiful name. Boy, I wish I was that clever for names...
Please take the time to pay her a visit at Secret Song Designs in Etsy and then pop over to her Blog with the same lovely name.
I won't tell you much about her for now, since I would like to make a proper introduction on the BSBP day, wich by the way will be the third one.

I don't know if you know that this time, Lori Anderson, from Pretty Things, our hostess, has indeed been very clever having three reveal days rather than just one, since we are so many and honestly it is too much to ask to visit every single participant and leave a thoughtful comment over the weekend.
This way, there is plenty of time to visit and enjoy yourself with all the eye candy that there is in this party.

Ok, going back to Shiraz.
She has worked with beads since she was eight years old, and for her it is a great way to relax, and besides relaxing she creates very pretty pieces.
To be honest, I am a bit of a nutter for Christmas, so what I like the most from her Etsy shop is her beaded Christmas ornament, I have even Pinned it on my Christmas board in Pinterest.

As I said, this is just for now, as I am still quite busy trying to unpack everything from our journey. I still have one suitcase that I have got to open.
I am trying to get back on track on many things, but I will be here, with some very exciting news and pictures and more. Stay tuned!!

*************************************************

¡Hola!

Ok, volviendo a Shiraz.

Bead Soup Blog Party

I have just signed up for the latest Bead Soup Blog Party hosted by Lori Anderson.

I love taking part on this event. It is a great way of meeting people, getting to know others a bit better, finding great new blogs and pushing yourself to create new pieces with items given by others.
Sometimes it can be very challenging to work with items that either you don't particularily like, or you have never used.

It really stretches your imagination, but it can be also very frustrating and let you wonder why on Earth did you signed up for this!

Anyhow I higly recomend you to take part on this sort of events. There are quite a few going around on the net and I just happen to have missed quite a few. I hate it when that happens.

***********************************************

London

This is just a quick note to let you know that I will be in London for the next few weeks.
It is exciting to go back to such an important place in my life.

I will keep you posted of the things and people that I will be meeting there.

But for now, see you!

Pero por ahora, see you!

Stamping away!

Even though I am not on the most productive time of my life, I have been doing some stamping.

I must say that I am enjoying it a big deal. It is easy and with great results. It also leaves you a great feeling of creating everything from scratch.
Something that I also like about this technique very much is the fact that you can create a unique piece in a rather short amount of time without having to buy new stuff.

But there is also a BIG downsize to it. A terrible urge of acquire new stamps!
I need new fonts and new stamps with many many different shapes. So if you don't know what to get me for Christmas, some stamps will do.
I am dying for those tiny baby feet! And also stamps with odd shapes to be able to make flowers and feathers and designs that are in my head and on my notebook. I guess I should be passing them all (designs) into my notebook cause I always think that I will not forget them, but then, puff, the idea is all gone, gone!

Here are some examples of what I have been doing:

This a keyring that I made for a friend. It rememorates the day she started going out with her boyfriend. Very romantic!

And I have kept making earrings. Love making these! I just need to get new washers. Loads of them.

And then I saw a tutorial of some simple and adjustable copper rings and I made few of those.

I hope you liked it!

***********************************************
